French Riviera food & wines

Provence wine, also known as Provençal wine, is a beloved French wine that originates from the wine-producing region of Provence in southeastern France. With a rich history that dates back over 2,600 years, Provence wine has evolved to become one of the world’s most popular wines.

Rosé de Provence owes its existence to Régine Sumeire, the owner of Château Barbeyrolles. In the 1980s, she came up with the idea of cold fermentation vinification for her Pétale de Rose wine. The goal was to enhance the wine’s aroma without deepening its color. This technique proved to be a game-changer, resulting in a wine that was not only more aromatic but also more delicate and elegant in color.

Thanks to the success of Château Barbeyrolles’ Pétale de Rose, the cold fermentation method was adopted by the whole of Provence. Today, Rosé de Provence is one of the most sought-after wines in the world, with demand increasing every year. While Château Barbeyrolles remains a classic, other wineries in the region have also made a name for themselves with the quality of their Rosé wine, including Château Minuty and Domaine d’Ott.
