When choosing a charter itinerary, it may be interesting to have a rough idea of the main distance your yacht will cover. In this article we look at the main distances between the main hot spots on the French Riviera and how to measure them.
1. French Riviera marine distance: Things to know for a daily trip
- Distances are measured “as the crow flies”: they reflect the shortest distance between two points, port to port.
- There are speed limits (20knots) and other boating restrictions in the Cannes and St Tropez area.
- Do not expect a daily return trip between Cannes and St Tropez or Monaco and St Tropez by sailing yacht or displacement yacht.
2. French Riviera marine distance: Cruising time
Average cruising time (excluding boarding and manoeuvring) for a sport yacht:
- Cannes to St-Tropez: 1 hour 30 by motorboat
- Cannes to Monaco: 1 hour 25
- St-Tropez to Monaco: 2 hours
- St-Tropez to Porquerolles: 1 hour 25
1 Nm: 1,852 m.
3. How to use Google Maps
- Open Google Maps on your computer.
If you’re using Maps in Lite mode, you’ll see a lightning bolt at the bottom and you won’t be able to measure the distance between points. - Right-click your starting point.
- Select Measure Distance.
- Click anywhere on the map to create a path to measure. To add another point, click anywhere on the map.
Optional: Drag a point or path to move it, or click a point to remove it. - At the bottom you’ll see the total distance in miles (mi) and kilometres (km).
- When finished: Click Close on the map at the bottom.
Knowing the average fuel consumption of your yacht (engines, generators…) at cruising speed and the price per litre (diesel at euros 2.35 per litre in 2022), you can roughly estimate the cost of your trip.
As an alternative, you can also use the Navionics marine charts mobile app. to measure distances at sea.
